Dr. Andrew Deutsch, a nationally respected expert in skeletal radiology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and serves as Chairman and CEO of Renaissance Imaging Medical Associates (RIMA) and as Medical Director of the Imaging Departments at Northridge Hospital Medical Center and Valley Presbyterian Hospital.
Born and raised in New York City and educated at Columbia University, Dr. Deutsch received his training in diagnostic radiology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where he did his residency, served as Chief Resident and did his fellowship training. While at UCSD, Dr. Deutsch was extremely fortunate to have two great mentors who profoundly influenced his career: Dr. George Leopold, Chairman of the Department of Radiology and a pioneer in the development of ultrasound in medicine, and Dr. Donald Resnick, the foremost authority today in the field of musculoskeletal radiology. Both men embodied qualities and values that have guided Dr. Deutsch in his subsequent practice including a dedication to academic excellence, ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, and recognition of the importance of humility. Until recently, Dr. Deutsch remained an active contributor to the teaching program at UCSD where he held the rank of Associate Clinical Professor of Radiology.
Dr. Deutsch is well known for his original contributions to the medical literature in the area of skeletal radiology and musculoskeletal and spinal MRI. He is the author of over 50 original scientific papers and has authored four textbooks utilized throughout the world to educate radiologists and orthopedic surgeons on musculoskeletal MRI. His first textbook, MRI of the Musculoskeletal System, was reviewed in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine as “the one textbook to own to learn musculoskeletal MRI.” His textbook on MRI of the Foot and Ankle remains the benchmark work in the field. Dr. Deutsch remains widely sought after as a lecturer at medical meetings and has spoken at courses throughout the United States, in Europe and Asia.
Prior to founding RIMA, Dr. Deutsch practiced in Los Angeles at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and in Santa Monica at Saint John’s Hospital and Health Center in conjunction with the Tower Imaging Medical Group.
In 1999, Dr. Deutsch formed a new medical imaging group, Renaissance Imaging, and recruited a team of highly talented specialty trained radiologists to join him in practice. This group was initially responsible for the dramatic transformation of the radiology department at Antelope Valley Hospital into one of the most technologically advanced in the United States, a transformation that both significantly impacted and improved the manner in which medicine is practiced in this community. Subsequently, this team of innovative radiologists have expanded their practice into multiple other hospitals and outpatient
imaging centers as RIMA has grown to be one of the largest and most successful radiology professional groups in California. The RIMA team remains committed to providing subspecialty radiology facilitated by the use of cutting edge imaging and communication technology.
In addition to his expertise in diagnostic radiology, Dr. Deutsch has extensive interest in the area of health care economics and quality issues in the delivery of medical services. In pursuit of these interests, Dr. Deutsch returned to graduate school where he studied at the prestigious Anderson School of Management at UCLA where he was awarded a Masters Degree in Business Administration.
When away from work, Dr. Deutsch is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time with his wife, who is also a physician and a Professor of Medicine at UCLA, as well as with his three children of whom he is very proud of their accomplishments.
